If you don't have a group health plan available through your employer, the most popular health plan choice is an Affordable Care Act (ACA) "Marketplace" Plan. The Open Enrollment Period runs from November 1st through December 15th each year. There are also Special Enrollment Periods based on individual circumstances. With approximately 50 different plans available throughout South Carolina, there should be a Marketplace Plan that will fit your needs.

For those individuals and families that don't qualify for Marketplace Premium Tax Credits, there are health insurance companies that offer "Off Exchange" health plans which typically offer lower rates than full price Marketplace plans without premium tax credits. If you are changing jobs and you are not yet eligible to enroll in your employer's health plan, then a Short Term Medical plan is an excellent option to consider. STM Plans are available for periods that range from 30 days to 330 days. So if you missed enrolling in a Marketplace Plan, a longer length STM Plan can bridge the interim gap until the next Marketplace Open Enrollment Period.
